What is the upper section bonus?
The upper bonus is Yahtzee's quiet engine: 35 points that don't depend on a lucky roll, just on steady work in the number categories.
How the bonus works
The upper section holds Ones through Sixes, each scoring the sum of the matching dice - three fives in the Fives box scores 15. If those six boxes total 63 or more, you add a 35-point bonus. It's binary: 63 gets the full 35, 62 gets nothing, which is why good players track their running upper total all game. The rules hub shows the full card.
Why 63 is the magic number
Sixty-three is exactly three of each face: 3x1 + 3x2 + 3x3 + 3x4 + 3x5 + 3x6 = 63. So the bonus asks for an average of three matching dice per number - very achievable across three rolls a turn. The practical rule: four-of-a-kind in a high number buys you slack, and a two-die deficit in sixes is much harder to repay than one in twos.
The bonus in other variants
The idea travels across the family. Yatzy pays 50 for the same 63 threshold, Maxi Yatzy pays 100 for reaching 84 with six dice (four of each number), and Kismet grades its bonus at 35, 55 or 75 depending on how high your upper total climbs. Wherever you play, the upper section is the steady income that good scores are built on.

What is the Yahtzee bonus?
Your first Yahtzee - five matching dice - scores 50 points in the Yahtzee category. Every additional Yahtzee you roll after that earns a 100-point bonus on top, provided you scored 50 (not zero) in the Yahtzee box. It's separate from the upper-section bonus, which adds 35 points for reaching 63 up top.
What is a good Yahtzee score?
A good solo score is 250 or more. Casual players average around 150-200 per game, while skilled players average roughly 240-260 even without extra Yahtzee luck. Anything over 300 means the bonuses landed, and the theoretical maximum - 13 Yahtzees deep - is 1,575.
How do you play Yahtzee?
Each turn you roll five dice up to three times, setting aside any dice you want to keep between rolls. Then you score the result in exactly one of 13 categories on your scorecard - each category can only be used once. After 13 turns the card is full, and the highest total wins.
