Where does Yahtzee come from?
The five-dice game the world knows as Yahtzee is younger than you might think - and it grew out of a whole family of older 'poker dice' games, with a genuinely charming origin story.
The dice games that came first
Long before Yahtzee, people were rolling five dice and hunting for poker-style combinations. Yacht, first published in 1938, laid down the template of upper-section numbers plus straights and five of a kind. In South America, Generala evolved along the same lines with its own scoring, and Scandinavia had its Yatzy tradition. Yahtzee is the most famous branch of this tree, not its root.
A couple, a yacht, and E. S. Lowe
The story goes that a Canadian couple played their own version of the game aboard their yacht - 'the yacht game' - and asked games entrepreneur Edwin S. Lowe to print some sets as gifts. Lowe, who had made his fortune with bingo cards, saw the potential, bought the rights, and began selling the game as Yahtzee in 1956. Milton Bradley acquired Lowe's company in 1973, and the trademark now belongs to Hasbro.
The Yatzy family lives on
Because the underlying idea is old and simple, close siblings thrive in the public domain. Yatzy is the Scandinavian standard with 15 categories, and Maxi Yatzy expands it to six dice. What is Generala?
Generala is the beloved South American cousin of Yahtzee, played with five dice and a lean 11-category card. Its combos pay fixed values - Escalera (straight) 20, Full 30, Poker (four of a kind) 40, Generala (five of a kind) 50 and Double Generala 100 - with a 5-point 'servida' bonus for landing a combo on the first roll of a turn.
Is Yahtzee luck or skill?
It is both, and the balance is more skill than most people assume. The dice decide what you roll, but you decide what to keep, what to re-roll, and which of the 13 categories to fill - and those choices compound over a whole game. Casual players average around 150-200, while skilled players average roughly 240-260 without any extra Yahtzee luck.
